Thomas Ernest Richards was born at Beverley, Western Australia on 6 April 1925, the son of Ernest Whitfield Richards and Mary May (nee Stone). His mother was a great-granddaughter of Thomas and Ann Stone. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force at Perth on 17 July 1943.
