William Luther Stone was born at Maldon, Victoria on 23 February 1920, the son of Edward Charles Stone and Rose (nee Pemberthy). His father was a great-grandson of Thomas and Ann Stone.
He enlisted at Shepparton on 22 June 1940 and after training was posted to the 4th Anti Tank Regiment on 2 December 1940. He disembarked at Singapore on 9 June 1941 and after serving in Malaya was reported “Missing” early in 1942 and confirmed as a Prisoner of War in June 1943.
He returned to Melbourne 0n 30 October 1945, suffering from medical conditions which resulted from his time as a POW. He was discharged on 31 January 1946.
